PHILADELPHIA Aug 17, 2021 /Philadelphia Business Journal/– Nearly 150 Greater Philadelphia companies made the cut for the 2021 Inc. 5000 list, showing massive growth at local firms over the last several years.
A total of 148 Philadelphia-area companies made this year’s list, compared with 137 businesses named in 2020 and 128 the year prior. The number of area businesses on the list has increased 43.6% since 2018, when there were 103 local companies in the rankings.
The list, unveiled Tuesday, ranks U.S. companies based on three-year revenue growth. Companies must be privately held, independently owned and have generated revenue by March 31, 2017 of at least $100,000. By 2020, eligible companies must have had a minimum revenue of $2 million. Inc. then looks at median three-year revenue growth to determine the list.
Dover, Delaware-based Whole9yards USA was the area’s highest-ranked company on the list at No. 38. The e-commerce retailer with operations in both the United States and India had 8,202% growth over three years. Whole9yards has a presence on Amazon, eBay, Walmart, Sears and Etsy, where it sells everything from electronics to toys to home goods. It was founded in 2017, and this is the first time it has been named to the list.
Ranked second-highest at No. 109 was Wilmington, Delaware-based GoSaaS. The cloud and software management firm had 3,763% revenue growth over three years.
Some of Philadelphia’s larger tech firms made the cut this year, as well, such as Ambler-based Phenom — which raised a $100 million Series D in April — at No. 928 and Piano, the Philadelphia company which recently raised $88 million, at No. 1,028. Phenom, whose ranking has bounced around over the years, was listed at No. 1,852 in 2020 but was as high as No. 277 in 2017. Piano was ranked at No. 708 in 2019 and No. 440 in 2018.
“Piano’s continued growth allows us to better serve our clients across the globe and make a tangible positive impact on how they interact with their customers digitally,” Piano CEO Trevor Kaufman said in a statement. “To still be in the Inc. 5000 four years after our first entry makes us so proud — it’s a testament to the energy and commitment our employees bring to their roles every day.”
Local companies had a median growth of 134%. Those businesses brought in $6.9 billion in revenue and created nearly 15,000 jobs. There were 71 repeat honorees and 12 newly founded companies on the list, according to Inc.
